1. Students all received a syllabus, which you can download here: Syllabus 13. We reviewed the procedures, policies, and curriculum. We then did a small icebreaker activity.
2. “In the Current.” Students read aloud this short memoir from Jo Ann Beard. We discussed and annotated as we read.
3. Students worked in small groups to answer questions about the text.
Next class, we will begin writing about a time we witnessed something an felt powerless to stop it.
HW: If not completed in class, return Personal Profile and Signed Policies page to Homework Box in Mr. Burgess’s room by 7:30 a.m. on Thursday.

1. Table of Contents.
2. Writing prompt: What identity do you only occupy part-way?
3. Begin read-aloud of The Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. We read one chapter today.
4. Cartoon of self showing weaknesses or insecurities.
5. Discussion of what Arnold would experience at Jordan.
6. Book choice and silent reading. Students chose to read either Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers or Accidental Love by Gary Soto. Everyone read their book of choice for 10 minutes and then wrote down their thoughts so far in a reading log they are using as a bookmark.
