2. Text and Subtexts. Students were assigned groups of 2-3 in which they examined in more detail one section of Act IV, scene i. In this scene, characters speak to each other without telling the whole truth. The underlying message, or subtext, of their words needs to be teased out. In class, students made a two-part script of their section of the scene, with one side for a simple paraphrase of character lines and the other to write the subtext of these lines, if any. Then, students performed these scene sections for class, reading their paraphrases loud and adding their subtext as an aside to the audience. 3. Then, students answered some oral quiz questions about Act IV, scenes 1-2.
4. Next, students reviewed Act IV, scene 3 by making a comic of Juliet’s fears regarding the potion.
