October 24: A Day

Today we revised our memoirs based on the feedback from our writer’s workshop groups. Then, we printed them off and wrote a reflection on the process. If you were absent, answer these questions about your memoir on a separate sheet of paper and bring in a printed copy of your final piece:

1. What parts of your memoir are the best?
2. What parts are you still not confident about?
3. What literary techniques helped your writing most?
4. Which literary techniques are you still not sure how to use well?
5. What were the most difficult parts of the process?
6. Tell about your Writer’s Workshop Group (or Partner). What did they do well? What more did you need from them?
7. What do you think the theme or message of your memoir is?
8. What have you learned about writing?
9. What grade would you give yourself on this project and why?
10. If we could go back in time, what could we have done differently in class to make you more successful on this project?

1. Freewrite.

2. Paper shuffling. We organized our papers and drafts in the correct order and stapled or clipped them together.

3. Reflection. Students answered the following questions about their memoir:

1. What are you most proud of?
2. What of your memoir are you still not confident about?
3. What literary techniques helped your writing most?

We studied symbolism, extended metaphor, slanted imagery, dialogue, diction, flashback,       foreshadowing, metacognition, and internal monologue.

4. Which literary techniques are you still not sure how to use well?
5. What were the most difficult parts of the planning and writing process?
6. Tell about your Writer’s Workshop Group (or Partner). What did they do well? What more did you need from them?
7. What did Ms. Garvoille do for you, either in class or outside of class, that you found most helpful?
8. How do you think reading A Walk in the Woods or Into Thin Air affect your writing, either directly or indirectly?
9. What have you learned about writing?
10. What grade would you give yourself on this project and why?
11. If we could go back in time, what could we have done differently in class to make you more successful on this project?

4. Memoir share. We heard a few great paragraphs from some memoirs out loud.

5. Vocabulary notes. We took notes through #15 today.
