Today we read the first three pages of To Kill a Mockingbird, which are a dense maze of hilarious historical jokes.
1. Annotation. First, we annotated the first three paragraphs of the novel using SCOPE.
2. Mr. Jones tells all. Mr. Jones told us about the third paragraph, Andrew Jackson (“our first redneck president”) and the Creek Indians.
3. Reading. I read the next few pages aloud to the students, stopping to explain references and elicit responses. Those opening pages are quite funny…if you get the jokes.
No homework.
