Today, students continued to research their cause on the SIRS database.
However, first we discussed plagiarism and how to avoid it.
1. Students received this handout on plagiarism: Avoiding Plagiarism. We discussed consequences for plagiarism, what it is, and how to avoid it. Students answered the questions on this worksheet to prove their understanding. The answers are: 1) no, 2) yes, 3) no, 4) no, 5) yes.
2. Students took notes in shorthand on articles from the SIRS database. I emphasize to students that it’s crucial to NOT take notes in complete sentences. Taking notes in complete sentences makes you more likely to plagiarize the sentence structure and wording than if you just take brief notes on the ideas.
For example, you might read this sentence from From Puritanism to Postmodernism by Ruland and Bradbury (1991): “Hawthorne and Melville were both skeptical writers, artists of an irony and detachment not always easy to follow yet essential to their literary discovery.”
In your notes you might write the following:
- H. & M. similarities: irony, separation from world
Abbreviate, use colons, use shorthand, use your own words. There should be no subjects or predicates in your notes! Only fragments. This is the one time you get to NOT write in complete sentences.
HW: Notes in GoogleDocs for speech from 3 sources from SIRS database due Tuesday 1/26.
Absentees: Print off the plagiarism worksheet. Complete it. Sign and date the bottom. Detach bottom portion and return to me. Spend 1 hour researching and taking notes on your cause.
