Day 9: Writer’s Workshop

Students shared their pieces with either one or two other students, looking for feedback.

1. First, we went over goals and expectations of workshop days. I have outlined the procedure on this handout, distributed to students on a purple sheet.

2. Students read, responded to, and suggested improvements for each author’s piece. All students, at the end of the period, had a to do list of at least 3 specific things to change in their current draft. If you are a parent, ask to see this list to help your child edit.

HW: All students must revise the piece they workshopped today. The revised piece (either the name piece or the episode piece) is due to me on Tuesday. It must be typed, in 12-point font, double-spaced. If you do not have printer/computer access this weekend, you may handwrite the piece according to the specifications on the purple sheet.

Honors must write between 2 and 10 pages and Standard should write between 1 and 10 pages. I emphasize that doing the bare minimum is just that — the bare minimum. I encourage all students to take ownership of this project by devoting more time to it. This revised piece will be worth a quiz grade. It will be graded on how different it is from the 1st draft and how well students followed through on their To Do lists.

Note: Any students interested in getting feedback from me before turning the piece in on Tuesday can email me at alexa.garvoille@dpsnc.net. I will do my best to guide you in a constructive direction.

Students who did not get a summer assignment last spring or over the summer: The Summer Assignment is due on Tuesday!
