1. Hurricane stories. We took a few minutes out of class to get out the excitement and tell stories about any hurricane happenings we saw this weekend.
2. Freewrite. Three minutes.
3. Review of subject/predicate. We discussed what part of speech each was and the definitions of indirect and direct object.
4. Subject/Predicate practice. Students completed this practice sheet where they identified the subject and predicate of each sentence: Parts of a Sentence Worksheet. This was collected for a classwork grade. If you were absent, download this worksheet to do at home.

4. Notes on Subject, Predicate, Direct Object, and Indirect Object.
We took notes on G1, a sheet of notebook paper on which we wrote the following:
Subject: The thing or person the sentence is about. Goes with the predicate verb of the sentence. A noun.
Predicate: The main verb of the sentence. What the subject does.
Direct Object: Who/what the verb does. I sing. Sing what? Songs. Songs is the direct object. Used with a transitive verb (transitive verb = any verb with a direct object).
Indirect Object: Who/what the verb is directing the action toward. Answers the question to whom? to what? to where? I read my sister stories. To whom? To my sister. My sister is the indirect object. (Stories is the direct object.)
5. Practice locating subjects and predicates. We used Socrative to test our knowledge of subjects and predicates in sentences.
6. Practice diagramming. Students learned the basics of diagramming sentences. We practiced a few sentence diagrams on whiteboards.
