Today students improved their burgeoning plot summaries through peer and self edits.
1. 3-2-1. To review the reading assignment for the day, each student wrote down 3 important events, 2 observations about the reading, and 1 question to pose to their group members.
2. Peer edits. Students exchanged summaries to edit for:
- Fragments & Run ons
- Wordiness
- Awkward Sentences
- Repetition
- Clarity
We edited with checklists and explanations of these elements in hand.
3. Self editing with grammar techniques. Each student drew a few writing techniques out of an envelope that they would use to improve the writing in their summary. Students added appositives, participial phrases, subordinating clauses, and parallel structure. Adding these techniques made for more complex, sophisticated sentence structures.
