Today students learned industry standard copyediting marks and revised the piece they wrote over the weekend.
- Copyediting marks. Students used this template as a guide to marks for making surface-level changes to texts. I used these marks in editing student drafts, which I will return on Tuesday. Here is a more comprehensive guide to these marks, if you’re interested: http://creativeservices.iu.edu/resources/guide/marks.shtml
- Self-directed editing. Students chose between 6 topics to improve their drafts: paragraph breaks, tense shifts, exclamation points (don’t use them, except in dialogue), CAPS (don’t use them, use italics instead), showing instead of telling, and punctuating dialogue. Read through the directions by downloading this handout.
HW: If you typed your piece, add your edits. Bring your Writer’s Notebook and edited weekend piece to class. Full rough draft of memoir (typed) due Friday.
